Happy Birthday Google

If you performed a Google query yesterday, you might have noticed that the iconic multi-colored Google logo was replaced with a pop-art birthday cake painting, marking September 27 as the date of Google’s founding.

Not much ink was spilled over the company’s start 12 years ago, but  most will agree that the ascent of the Google empire has impacted our daily lives more then any other aspect of digital computing and technology (yes, even more than the iPod or iPad).

I recently spent two days networking with 250 other social media strategists and marketers, talking about podcasts, twitter streams and other forms of electronic communication. Regardless of the topic, everything at some point, came back to Google. No matter which end of the search spectrum you are on, you can add a few tweaks here and there to add some “Google juice” and get your self, your hobby, your service, your passion, found on Google. Once Google has you in its sights, you could potentially attain world-wide presence. What other service or product comes even close to providing such reach?

In the 12 years it has been in existence, Google has grown from find-it-all search, to  a complete cloud-based digital platform. Their products are robust enough to store and host documents and websites for a small to medium size business. Thanks to Google, all you really need to start a business is an Internet connected computer, a few bucks for web hosting, and a great idea.

Twelve years is a long time for any computer service or product to survive, and Google has innovated throughout its existence. I can’t wait to see what it will cook up by 2022, when it will be 24 years old.
